Lawn Care, Fertilization, and Weed Control in Illinois
A patchy lawn, persistent weeds, or grass that keeps struggling through the summer often points to something happening underground. At Turf Rx of Illinois, we build every lawn care program around your soil, not just your grass. From the first application in early spring to the final treatment before winter, our program delivers what your turf actually needs, when it needs it, using high-quality products that are better for your lawn and the environment.
Our lawn care program combines seasonal fertilization and comprehensive weed control into one customized plan, with two to six applications per year based on your budget and your lawn's condition. We measure every property by satellite before we quote, so your program is priced and applied with precision. No guesswork. No cookie-cutter treatments. Just consistent, expert care from a team that has been providing lawn care in northern Illinois since 2017.
Here's what our Lawn Care Program includes:
- Pre-Emergent and Post-Emergent Weed Control: Seasonal applications timed to soil temperature to stop crabgrass before it germinates and eliminate broadleaf weeds throughout the growing season.
- Fertilization: Dry granular fertilizer with micronutrients applied every round to strengthen grass, improve soil health, and support root development through northern Illinois's full growing cycle.
- Customized Treatment Plans: Two to six applications per year, built around your property's square footage, current turf condition, and budget.
- Seasonal Care: Services run from late March through December, with application timing adjusted each visit based on weather and turf conditions, not a fixed schedule.
Lawn Care That Treats the Root of the Problem
Most lawn care programs stop at the surface. Turf Rx of Illinois goes deeper. Every fertilization and weed control application we make is grounded in soil science, using the right products at the right time to build a lawn that stays healthier from one season to the next.
- Dry Fertilizer Every Round: We apply premium dry granular fertilizer with every program visit, including micronutrients that most programs skip. This approach feeds your soil consistently and supports the root development that keeps your lawn strong through northern Illinois summers.
- Industry-Leading Weed Control: We use the highest-rate active ingredients available for crabgrass control, combined with both pre-emergent and post-emergent treatments throughout the season. Weeds are addressed at every stage of growth, not just once in the spring.
- No Contracts Required: Your program renews each year automatically for your convenience, but you are never locked into a contract. We earn your business every season. If you ever need a service call between applications, that is on us.
Our Work Speaks for Itself
Turf Rx of Illinois has grown from 9 customers in 2017 to nearly 600 today, almost entirely through word of mouth. That kind of growth does not happen by cutting corners or sending the same generic treatment to every property. It happens by paying attention, communicating with customers, and doing the work right the first time.
Every lawn care program includes free service calls between scheduled applications, no contracts, and a team that will tell you exactly what we are seeing in your lawn and your area throughout the season. When something comes up, we handle it. That is the standard we have held since day one, and it is why our customers keep renewing and keep sending their neighbors our way.
Lawn Fertilization Built for Illinois Soil
Northern Illinois lawns are primarily cool-season grasses, including Kentucky bluegrass, tall fescue, and perennial ryegrass. These grass types have specific nutrient needs across the growing season, and the timing of fertilization matters as much as what goes on. Apply nitrogen too early in spring and you push top growth before roots are ready. Apply it too late and you miss the critical fall window when cool-season turf stores energy for winter.
At Turf Rx of Illinois, every fertilization application includes a dry granular product with macronutrients and micronutrients, including iron, manganese, and the trace elements that most granular programs leave out. We adjust fertilizer blend and rate based on where you are in the growing season, what we observe in your lawn, and any soil testing we have done for your property. The result is consistent, measurable improvement in turf color, density, and soil health over time.
Not sure what your lawn actually needs? We also offer soil testing to analyze your soil's pH and nutrient levels before recommending treatments. Testing takes the guesswork out of fertilization and helps us build a program matched to your soil's specific conditions.
Weed Control That Works All Season Long
Weed control in Illinois requires a two-part approach because different weeds emerge at different times of year. Pre-emergent herbicides create a barrier in the soil that prevents annual weeds like crabgrass from germinating. In northern Illinois, that window opens when soil temperatures at a two-inch depth approach 50 to 55 degrees, typically in late April to early May. Miss that window and crabgrass establishes before any barrier can stop it.
Post-emergent treatments handle broadleaf weeds and any annual weeds that get through, targeting them after they appear. Turf Rx of Illinois uses both throughout the season, applied at the right growth stages to maximize effectiveness. We do not rely on a single spring treatment and call it done. Weed pressure changes as the season progresses, and our program is built to respond to what is actually happening in your lawn.
- Pre-emergent weed control: Applied in late April to early May, timed to soil temperature in northern Illinois. Prevents crabgrass, foxtail, and other summer annual grasses before they emerge.
- Post-emergent weed control: Targets broadleaf weeds (dandelion, clover, plantain, thistle) and breakthrough summer annuals throughout the growing season.
- Specialty weed control: Available as an add-on for difficult or persistent weed problems outside the standard program.
- Flower bed pre-emergent: Keeps ornamental beds clean without disrupting established plantings. Available as a stand-alone add-on service.
Our Lawn Care Program: Up to 6 Applications Per Year
Every Turf Rx of Illinois lawn care program is built around your property and your budget. We offer two to six applications per season, from a foundational two-treatment plan for customers focused on weed prevention and basic nutrition, to our full six-round program that covers the complete growing season from early spring through late fall.
- Round 1 — Early Spring (Late March to Late April)
Pre-emergent weed control applied ahead of soil temperature thresholds. This first application establishes the crabgrass barrier before northern Illinois soils warm into the germination window. We begin service based on current weather, not a fixed calendar date. - Round 2 — Late Spring (May)
Post-emergent broadleaf weed control to address weeds that emerged over winter or broke through early. First fertilization of the season with a balanced granular blend, timed after the initial spring growth flush so nutrients go toward root development rather than excessive top growth. - Round 3 — Early Summer (June)
Mid-season fertilization to support the lawn through the first heat stress period. Second post-emergent weed control application targeting any remaining or new broadleaf pressure. We assess turf condition and disease risk at this visit. - Round 4 — Late Summer (July to August)
Balanced fertilization to sustain the lawn through peak heat. Weed touch-up as needed. This application also prepares turf for the critical fall recovery period that follows summer dormancy. - Round 5 — Early Fall (September)
Fall fertilization is the single most important application of the year for cool-season lawns. We apply a high-potassium blend that supports root development, winter hardiness, and early spring green-up. Pre-emergent for winter annual weed control is applied at this visit for full-program customers. - Round 6 — Late Fall (October to December)
Winterizer fertilizer application that stores carbohydrate reserves in the grass plant for a stronger start next spring. Final weed assessment. The program closes based on weather conditions, turf dormancy, and ground temperature, not a fixed end date.
Two-round and four-round programs are also available for customers with specific budget needs. Every plan includes the same product quality and attention to detail. We will walk you through your options when we build your quote.
What to Expect From Our Lawn Care Program
- Step 1: Satellite Measurement and Proposal
Before we quote anything, we measure your property by satellite to calculate square footage and identify obstacles like beds, hardscaping, and structures. You receive a written proposal with your exact square footage and our standard price sheet attached. No estimates. No surprises. - Step 2: Program Start and Scheduling
Once you approve the proposal, your program begins at the next appropriate application window, depending on the season and weather. We service lawns without you needing to be home. You will receive advance notice before each visit. - Step 3: Seasonal Communication
Throughout the season, we share observations and recommendations based on what we are seeing in your area. If there is unusual disease pressure, drought stress, or a pest concern developing, we will let you know. You are never left guessing about the condition of your lawn. - Step 4: Free Service Calls
If you notice a problem between scheduled applications, service calls are on us. These are rare, but the option is always available. We stand behind the work. - Step 5: Automatic Renewal and Prepay Option
Your program automatically renews each year for your convenience. Prepay customers receive a 5% discount on the full season. Billing is time-of-service unless you elect the prepay option.
Enhance Your Program
Our core lawn care program covers fertilization and weed control. These optional add-ons address specific issues beyond the standard plan.
- Add-On 1: Grub Control
Grub larvae feed on grass roots from late spring through fall, causing irregular brown patches that look like drought stress but do not recover with watering. A single preventive or curative grub control application can protect your lawn before damage sets in. - Add-On 2: Lawn Disease Control
Northern Illinois lawns are susceptible to fungal diseases, including dollar spot and brown patch, particularly during warm, humid stretches in July and August. Targeted fungicide treatments can stop active disease and protect against recurrence. - Add-On 3: Lime or Gypsum Treatment
Illinois soils, particularly in areas with heavy clay, can become acidic or compacted over time. A lime treatment raises soil pH to improve nutrient availability. A gypsum treatment improves drainage and loosens compacted soil without affecting pH. Soil testing can help determine which, if either, is appropriate for your lawn. - Add-On 4: Flower Bed Pre-Emergent
Keep ornamental beds clean through the season with a targeted pre-emergent application. Prevents annual weed establishment in beds without disturbing established plantings. - Add-On 5: Soil Testing
A soil test takes the guesswork out of your program. We analyze your soil's pH and nutrient levels and use the results to adjust your fertilization plan. Particularly valuable for properties with persistent turf problems.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I mow right after a fertilization treatment?
We recommend waiting at least 24–48 hours and watering your lawn before mowing after a fertilization treatment. This gives the product time to activate and absorb properly.
How often should my lawn be fertilized?
Most lawns benefit from fertilization every 6 to 8 weeks during the growing season. However, the ideal schedule can vary based on your grass type, soil condition, and local climate.
What kind of fertilizer do you use?
We use professional-grade, slow-release fertilizers tailored to the season and your lawn’s specific needs. Our blends promote long-lasting results while being safe for your lawn, family, and pets when used as directed.
Will fertilization get rid of weeds?
While fertilization promotes a thicker lawn that naturally crowds out weeds, we combine it with targeted weed control for best results. Fertilization alone won’t eliminate existing weeds!
How do I know if my lawn needs professional care?
Every lawn can benefit from ongoing care, regardless of its current condition. Professional lawn care helps maintain a healthy, lush lawn, prevents common issues like weeds or pests, and improves overall appearance. Even if your lawn seems fine, regular maintenance can keep it thriving year-round. If you’re noticing signs like uneven growth, thinning grass, brown patches, or insect problems, it may be time for professional care to get your lawn back in top shape.
How do I prepare my landscape for a treatment?
There’s no need to prepare your landscape for treatment! However, you will likely need to water your lawn or landscape after the treatment to help the products work effectively and ensure results.
Is there anything I will need to do to ensure results of my lawn care program?
Yes. While our fertilization, weed control, and disease prevention treatments will significantly improve your lawn’s overall health and appearance, regular mowing and watering - as well as proper drainage - are essential to maximize the benefits. Mowing helps keep your lawn at an optimal height, and consistent watering ensures your grass gets the moisture it needs to thrive. Drainage in your yard is also important as poor drainage can cause turf diseases. All this to say, our lawn care service should be part of your lawn regimen - but not the only thing!
What types of lawn care services do you offer?
Our lawn care services are focused on improving the health of your lawn rather than just its appearance. We offer recurring services like fertilization, weed control, and disease prevention to promote a healthy, vibrant lawn throughout the year. However, we do not provide mowing services as part of our offerings. Our goal is to ensure your lawn is strong, resilient, and well-nourished.
